Jay-Z nails it

Sunday, June 29, 2008

Just watched Jay-Z’s headline Glastonbury set (on TV obviously, see previous post). Amazing. He totally nailed it. After all the negative press, he was superb. Even if you are not a big fan of his music (and I’m not) you can’t deny the man has got some serious style. It was all so slick, so professional and so tailored to that crowd, unlike the rambling crackhead who preceded him. This clip is of his first two songs, the first of which was his tongue-in-cheek way of hitting back at Oasis, done with exactly the right amount of humour. So wish I had been there now…..

Sky+ reveals all

Saturday, June 28, 2008

Your Sky + planner reveals a lot about your domestic situation. This is mine. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. For years, this weekend would normally have been spent getting merry at Glastonbury but how times have changed. The list of bad TV and kids shows pretty much sums up life as a new dad with a wife who’s got a thing for reality programmes. That said, I have to confess to watching ‘I’d do anything’ (what else are you going to do on a Saturday when you’ve got to babysit?), I can’t avoid ‘Britain’s next top model’ because it is always on in our house and In the Night garden is meant to send Sam to sleep. Check your Sky+ out now and see what life stage you’re at.

Pop Up hotel

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Saw this on Cool Hunting and it is really cool. French company that makes pop-up hotel rooms that they will construct in almost any location.

“130 square feet packed with all of the amenities you’d expect from an actual hotel. Rooms have hardwood floors and a cloth ceiling fitted with low voltage lighting. Insulated for both temperature and noise, they are climate-controlled with individual heating and air conditioning systems. There’s also a full bathroom with hot water and functional shower”. That’s the way to do a festival….

Love this campaign

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

From the end of last year, this campaign is now picking up the awards it deserves. What a brilliant way of demonstrating how much people love your product over the competition. Take it away from them.
This is a ‘wish i had thought of that’ moment for me. Hats off to CPB.

Vinyl addiction

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

More addictive than crack and just as bad for your bank balance, Vinyl addiction is virtually impossible to get out of your system. I’ve been hooked on vinyl for nearly 18 years now. For ages my Saturday ritual was all about getting into Soho bang on midday and wondering between Black Market, Reckless, Vinyl junkies and more recently Phonica spending hours and hours flicking through shelves and shelves of vinyl. I loved it. The sense of anticipation of what might be in, the slightly too hot shops, the banter with the blokes behind the counter, the lines of head nodding bedroom DJs on the test decks. Brilliant. That was the days when we ran a sound system and played out quite a bit. Things have moved on - wife, kid, responsibility etc. We packed in the sound system a couple of years ago, guitar music came back, the internet and stupid rents are threatening a lot of the shops but every now and again, I get that urge to buy vinyl again. Ironically, I do it online now. Juno is by far and away my favourite site. I must have given them obscene amounts of cash over the last 5 or so years. I can’t help myself. Last night I spanked at least £100 on some great disco re-edits and lush deep house. Nobody in any club will hear it but my mates will get a few CDs and I’ll get that buzz of dropping them onto my knackered old 1200’s and remembering the old times : )

He uses real, grimy environments as the backdrop for a series of unconventional, mass produced figures. I like them a lot and have a couple of prints.

Small business names

Monday, June 23, 2008

Lots of people in advertising think that puns are evil but I disagree. More often than not they make me smile and even though you won’t find them in any copy I write, that can’t be such a bad thing. Small business names are full of puns, this website has complied a list of 50 of them. There are definately some good ones here (see below) but I have seen loads more around and about.
Some of my favourites are:
Jason’s Donor van (just been told this one. nice)
Pie-minister (pie stall seen at loads of festivals)
Good Thai Dins (again a festival regular)
Turn’em Clean (Laundrette near Turnham Green, London)
